Today, I tried to follow-up with a phone call to check the status of my application. And I found it's ludicrously difficult to navigate their website. Their contact info is woefully bare. I called the only phone number I could find for the location I applied to and a security guard answered. Because that phone number calls the security office. He was very nice though and tried to call HR for me, but they didn't pick up. I ended up using their automated email form to send a message to their jobs/careers section on the website. I just wanted to talk to someone in person so they'd know I was interested because I am VERY interested in this position. I thought one was supposed to follow up job applications with phone calls, am I mistaken?

You did exactly what you were supposed to. I don't know why companies make it so hard to contact people within them.

While it's good to follow up, some companies won't give out their HR number openly because they get bombarded with phone calls. If you have an actual recruiter contact you, that's your in!

I tried the same thing a few months ago with Chrysler. Found two numbers from the location, but no one answered. Then I called the corporate generic number, was forwarded to employee services, or something like that, then was told that numbers aren't given out. I was told just to watch online to see if I am chosen. I don't like the process, but I guess HR is tired of people calling them. IDK, I just wanted to do what I was supposed to.

I'm currently in the full time job search. Can confirm, almost not worth trying if the information isn't already readily available. Also, you don't even get a response most of the time doing online applications.

Good luck getting the HR of any company to answer your phone call on your first try. Email might work better.

BTW forgot to mention, I also applied to a job at continental. Took them quite a while to respond, but they did. So it could take a while, but they seemed good to at least respond back eventually.
